You need your TIN for work. Your client is asking for it. You know you registered with the BIR before—but you cannot remember the number.
So you search for “BIR TIN number search by name.”
Can you simply enter your name on the BIR website and find your TIN?
Not exactly.
The BIR does not provide a public database where taxpayers can simply type a person’s name and retrieve a TIN. Instead, the Bureau has specific procedures for taxpayers who need to verify or inquire about an existing TIN.
Why Can’t You Just Search for Your TIN by Name?
A TIN is assigned to a taxpayer and is used for transactions with the BIR. A name alone is also not enough to reliably identify one taxpayer.
The BIR’s official TIN Validation service is designed to validate an existing TIN. It asks for the TIN together with identifying information such as the taxpayer’s first name, middle name, last name, suffix, sex assigned at birth, and birthdate.
In other words, TIN validation is different from a public TIN search by name.
This matters when you are unsure whether you already have a TIN. Searching random websites or applying for another TIN without checking first may create more confusion.
What If You Already Have a TIN but Forgot the Number?
This is where the BIR’s TIN Inquiry process becomes useful.
The BIR provides a TIN Inquiry service through REVIE for taxpayers who are having trouble with their TIN. The inquiry asks for personal information and identification documents so the BIR can verify that the request belongs to the taxpayer.
BIR Revenue Memorandum Order No. 20-2024 also provides a process for TIN inquiries through email. The BIR checks the information submitted by the taxpayer against its registration databases. If the information matches, the BIR can provide the taxpayer’s TIN through email.
So if you simply forgot your TIN, the practical step is to inquire about your existing record—not immediately apply for another number.
What If the BIR Cannot Find Your TIN?
There are two possibilities worth considering.
If the BIR’s records do not show a TIN matching the information you provided, the BIR may advise you to apply for one through its Online Registration and Update System (ORUS).
The BIR currently uses ORUS for various registration transactions. Its Citizen’s Charter includes online applications for TIN registration of local employees as well as TIN and registration of individual new business registrants.
This is where BIR online registration for TIN number becomes relevant.
But there is another situation: the BIR may discover that more than one TIN exists under your name. In that case, RMO No. 20-2024 states that the taxpayer should coordinate with the appropriate Revenue District Office to address the duplicate TINs so that only one TIN remains.
If you are looking for a BIR TIN number search by name, there is no public name-only search that will simply reveal your TIN.
If you forgot an existing TIN, inquire first through the BIR’s official TIN Inquiry process. If you do not have a TIN, you can then proceed with the appropriate BIR online registration for TIN number.
The important thing is to determine your existing TIN status before applying for another one.
