BIR Tax Identification Number: What You Need to Know About Your TIN and TIN ID

BIR Tax Identification Number

“Please send us your TIN ID.”

It sounds like a simple request. But what if you do not remember your TIN? Or you have never had a TIN ID before? And what exactly is the difference between your BIR Tax Identification Number and your TIN ID?

These are common questions when someone starts a new job, becomes a freelancer, or begins registering a business.

The first thing to understand is simple: your TIN and your TIN ID are not the same thing.

What Is a BIR Tax Identification Number?

A BIR Tax Identification Number (TIN) is the number assigned to you by the Bureau of Internal Revenue for tax-related purposes.

Your TIN is used in your transactions with the BIR and in situations where your taxpayer identification is required.

If you have previously worked, registered a business, or obtained a TIN for another legitimate purpose, you may already have one. The BIR’s TIN Inquiry service allows taxpayers having trouble with their TIN to submit their information for verification.

This is important because forgetting your TIN does not mean you should immediately apply for another one. If you already have a TIN, the proper step is to locate or verify your existing record.

Your TIN Is Not the Same as Your TIN ID

Think of it this way:

TIN = your taxpayer identification number.
TIN ID = an identification document showing your TIN.

The BIR currently provides a Digital TIN ID through its Online Registration and Update System (ORUS). Individual taxpayers with an existing TIN, whether or not they have a physical TIN Card, can apply for the Digital TIN ID.

The Digital TIN ID is recognized as a valid government-issued identification document, subject to authentication and verification. It can be verified online through its QR code when generated through ORUS.

In 2026, the BIR also announced that the Digital TIN ID can be accessed through the eGovPH App Mobile ID Wallet.

What Are the BIR Requirements for TIN ID?

If you are searching for BIR requirements for TIN ID, the requirements depend on whether you are obtaining a Digital TIN ID or applying for a physical TIN Card.

For a Digital TIN ID, an individual taxpayer needs an ORUS account and an existing TIN. The BIR also requires an updated email address in its registration records and an appropriate taxpayer photo uploaded through ORUS. The photo must meet the BIR’s prescribed specifications.

For a physical TIN Card, the BIR’s checklist includes BIR Form 1905, a recent 1×1 photo, and an applicable government-issued ID or proof of residence or business address, depending on the circumstances.

What If You Don’t Have a TIN Yet?

This is where the process changes.

If you have never been issued a TIN, you need to determine the appropriate BIR registration process based on your situation. The BIR currently provides online TIN registration and business registration services through ORUS, including applications for local employees and individual new business registrants.

For someone who is starting as a freelancer, for example, the registration requirements may be different from those of an employee. That is why knowing your taxpayer classification before registering is important.

Don’t Start With the TIN ID—Start With Your TIN

The TIN comes first.

If you already have a TIN, you can determine the appropriate way to verify it and obtain your Digital TIN ID. If you do not have one, you need to complete the appropriate BIR registration first.

And if you are unsure whether a TIN was previously issued to you, check before applying again. BIR procedures specifically address duplicate TINs and require taxpayers with multiple TINs to coordinate with the appropriate Revenue District Office.
